Picture in your mind a boat. A boat to be a boat needs to be in the water. To function as a

boat it must be in the water. A boat should be in the water, but the water should not be in the boat. But the more the water is in the boat, it runs the risk of sinking and no longer being a boat!

Jesus said it this way. “Be in the world, but not of the world.” In other words, we should be in the world, but the world should not be in us.

James captured this ethic in saying, “He who is a friend of the world is an enemy of God.” He spoke of an intimacy, for the NT Greek word “friend” was also used for the word “kiss.”

Do not kiss the world. Be in the world, but don’t let it sink your boat!

The Meaning of Sin — Romans 5:19
At a distance of ten yards my kids could easily shoot an arrow into a bale of hay. “Move back and aim higher,” I instructed. With practice, they could still hit it. Then I challenged them: “The target is in Paris. Aim higher.” “Dad, that’s impossible,” they complained. “No one could hit that target.” That’s the word the Bible uses for sin—to miss the target. It isn’t that we need more practice. It’s humanly impossible NOT to miss. As a descendant of Adam all sin and fall short (miss the target) of the glory of God. Through one man’s disobedience, the many were made sinners. This is Dr. Jay Quine. Remember this word. Stop trying to pull the bow back further. Quit it! It is humanly impossible. Turn to Christ. Through the obedience of this One, the you will be declared righteous. By faith in Him you can hit the target–and your sin will not be in the eyes of the Lord. Only by faith can you live a changed life.
